Today at our WSOMUN conference, our delegates started to delve into topics of deeper concern as this was the first full day of the conference.
UNHRC looked at evaluating potential human rights infringements by technological development, so how technology can cause issues that arise with our knowledge in understanding of technology as a whole. For example, spies and cyber-trespassing across the internet, specifically to uncover government information. The other problem that was explored was deploring the Rohingya persecution in Myanmar to aid urgent action to prevent the possibility of genocide. There were some very heated debates, with very valid points being mentioned, especially from the delegates of Turkey and Chile, who seemed to be the vocal points of the conference. A resolution for rehabilitating the Rohingya tribe was brought up by the delegate of Bangladesh, which was passed by the respective chairs of the committee. UNICEF and UNSC both debated some very relevant real world problems that require resolutions. UNICEF covered Children’s healthcare rights during war and children’s roles in drug trafficking. The delegate of Saudi Arabia suggested some respectable resolutions to the issues, however the delegate of Bangladesh seemed to counter his points with her contrasting views on the topics, though still solving the issues at hand. UNSC covered territorial problems in the South China Sea and North Korea’s right to Nuclear power. Resolutions were also discussed and passed. The 2 general assemblies (DISEC and SOCHUM) discussed numerous resolutions to their problems concerning bioterrorism, cyber warfare, natural disasters and refugee populations. UNCSW and UNHCR also covered issues on the needs of children and the disabled and the Syrian refugee communities. Today was an eventful day overall as our first crisis took place across all committees. The crisis that occurred dealt with the release of an unidentified biological agent that affected a string of countries, causing casualties and ultimately led to the rise of numerous issues that needed to be solved within each committee. One very interesting turn of events took place in DISEC. As the debate started to heat up during the emergency crisis, delegates of the UK, France, Russia, China and USA and other countries with considerably large influences in the international sphere contributed their views as well as their requirements and problems of the council. For example, a British ship had been captured by China and nuclear warheads in North Korea had been miniaturized following funding from Russia. This crisis also included natural casualties for China, Vietnam and the Philippines. After much discussion, the council worked closely to reach a consensus to benefit each of the effected countries equally. In addition to all of these events unfolding, there was also a kidnapping that took place in GA3, sending the delegates into a frenzy of debates and discussions. Following the procedures of a real United Nations conference, the crisis was resolved through a series of committee proceedings. The evening was full of fun owing to the wonderful social that took place in the sports hall. The extravagant decorations and food put the delegates in a chirpy mood. A mini birthday celebration for one of the chairs was even held. There was a lot of dancing and singing, a change of atmosphere from the otherwise formal and serious tone of the conference. It was an eventful and successful day at our WSOMUN conference. The delegates and team of students enjoyed themselves immensely and we hope everyone is looking forward to the third and final day of the conference !
